Engr Joseph Ayanam

I am Joseph Ayanam, an electrical/power engineer with a Higher National Diploma in Electrical/Electronics Engineering (Upper Credit) from the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Nigeria. My career began in power systems, where I have worked on the design, installation, protection and maintenance of systems up to 33 kV.

My work includes power flow analysis, relay coordination, transformer testing, and preventive maintenance of substations and industrial plants. Along the way, I added qualifications in Health, Safety and Environment (Levels 1-3) and Non-Destructive Testing (Level II), which sharpened my commitment to safety, asset integrity and a zero-harm workplace.

My curiosity later led me into artificial intelligence. As Team Lead of an AI Hub, I have driven interdisciplinary research and innovation. I have also contributed to the Nigerian Artificial Intelligence Strategy and AI Scaling Hub activities, and to curriculum development in emerging technologies and digital skills. As Principal Researcher on a Multilingual Speech Translation System project, I coordinated stakeholders, project planning and governance. I am drawn to AI for sustainable development, language technologies for low-resource languages, and AI-driven education.

My vision is to advance electrical engineering through research that produces efficient, sustainable and smart energy solutions, while bridging academia, industry and public policy to build human capital for the future.
